Appreciating Past DS106 Stories

Faced with lots of choice, what are you to do? I skirted around the resources and eventually settled on a story that caught my attention because it was building on the very well known story of Alice in Wonderland. Taking stories that are very familiar is a good tactic since they will have established certain characters and story arcs in the public imagination. Drawing on Alice is particularly effective because it is a resonant story that has been widely retold over the years adding to its layers in our memories.

Alice, Interrupted is history student Brooke Parker’s Final Project for ds106 in the Spring of 2013 at UMW. According to her production notes, Brooke recalls that she learned that everything is a remix to the extent that it becomes pointless to call something a remix. Her starting point for her digital story is to think about what happened to Alice after she left Wonderland, aiming for something mysterious and suspenseful. We might agree that Alice’s experiences can’t have left her unscathed.

It’s a digital story in that it uses various media embedded or linked via a blog post ( a remixed web page, a scanned original letter, some manipulated found photographs, and a video in the style of CCTV. It is a story that can stand on its own, but one that taps deliberatley into the Alice storyworld. Alice is sent to a psychiatric hospital, but escapes, seemingly with the Mad Hatter. As a story, it stands alone and connects to the storyworld. If the link between fantasy and madness, and reality and fiction is obvious, it is because it should be. We are governed by fictions that serve as realities. Sometimes, these get mixed up and that is the endearing attraction of Alice.
